May 17th: Drama
On May 17th, we managed to sort out a lot of important things that needed to doing or scheduling. We have arranged an extra rehearsal on Thursday 26th May for 2 hours in the drama department at school. With this extra rehearsal in, we could afford to spend an hour making all the necessary props needed for the performance. We decided, instead of making lots of unnecessary props and backdrops, we would just put a black or plain piece of cloth on the rail at the back which I will be providing and put on a sign that says ‘The House’ on one side and ‘The Forest’ on the other.
On the stairs, we have made a sign that says ‘Forest Path’ on one side and ‘Bed’ on the other.
We are putting a sign on the book simply saying ‘book’ on it. We have also made the cover of the book with a scary photo of little red on the front and a blurb on the back which has been edited and changed really obviously in black marker. This also references the script which is an extra detail we thought we be good to include.
Finally, we made a tag for the axe which just said ‘Axe’ on it. Olly wanted to make an axe out of paper and tinfoil but we thought it would add to the humour if we just used a simple stick with a label on it.
During lunch, we rehearsed as we need all the time we can get. We just rehearsed the play, going through it from start to finish with as little interruptions as possible then we discussed where we would get the cloth for the rail and the table from. I told them that I could ask my grandma as she was likely to be able to provide us with some and contacted her. She said I could go and have a look so I am going on Sunday to choose some appropriate material.
Unfortunately, Frankie and I aren’t going to be in the rehearsal on Tuesday as we have a PE Theory exam that day. This is another factor which makes Thursday’s rehearsal even more important. On Thursday, we are bringing all costumes, props and the backdrops I have chosen and we will have our first dress and technical rehearsal!

Importance Of Learning Lines
Learning lines is VERY important and the reason why I am writing about this is because in my last lesson write up (link), I wrote that we needed to learn our lines and that Olly was struggling with this especially.
It is very important to learn lines because if one person doesn’t know their lines, it throws everybody off course because cues will be missed or not said and whole performance will lose pace and the storyline will go flat. This will be confusing for the audience as they wont know whats going on and will not enjoy or more importantly, learn anything from the performance because as a piece of Theatre In Education, it’s main purpose is to educate and it cannot do that if all the lines aren’t learnt.
I hope this highlights the importance of learning lines as much as it should do.
How And Why We 'Polish' A Performance
On May 17th, when discussing our blog entries, Miss Woffinden noticed that I’d mentioned that we needed to ‘polish’ our performance and told me I should explain what it meant and why we do it.
When I say we need to polish a performance, I mean we need to rehearse it so that everybody is certain on what they are doing and there is no danger on anybody messing up. The performance is slick and flowing with no pauses where there shouldn’t be and the dialogue flows naturally. We need to rehearse a lot more so that we don’t need to stop and clarify the stage directions, we just do them naturally because we have done it that many times that it is stuck in our heads but it also needs to look as if its coming naturally so that the performance is more realistic. This isn’t as important for our performance as it is for the others as ours is very Brecht in style with the props and set especially.
However, we still cannot afford any mistakes or mess-ups and therefore need to ‘polish’ the performance until we are certain this will not happen.
Funding For TiE
Funding for Theatre Education is an important factor to take into account as when travelling, you need to work out how much you can spend on the cost of travelling as well as for paying the staff, buying necessary equipment and props and hiring rehearsal space. The West Yorkshire Playhouse’s production of ‘The Worm Collector’ (link) for example, was funded by The Home Office Community Fund, Education Leeds and supported by The Royal Armouries. I thought that is was rather strange for the Royal Armouries to be supporting a piece of Theatre In Education so I researched into why they did and found that they offered some of their expertise on weapon awareness (source). I also looked into why the Home Office funded ‘The Worm Collector’ and found that they fund things to do with preventing knife crime gangs and guns (source). There was a document attached which contains the successful applicants list which I also saved and can be found here and here.
